I also contributed a couple of lines of code to fastskip and found the method of distribution (source + tap) ideal for supporting the topfield community. There is nothing illegal about fastkip. The primary author decided eventually that there was a risk of infringing german patents (not that it did infringe anything - just the risk in germany) and hence withdrew his personal involvement in the code and distribution.
The fact that it was always bug-free is a consequence of this source-code distribution method and it is a shame that there is no skip tap currently available as open source (like the bug-free geburtstag tap).
It is also, perhaps, a lesson to all tap developers that if you are not interested in a commercial tap than using berlios or googlecode as a distribution platform is worth considering from the word go.
