hello all ,

i have topfield 5500 pvr with and 300 gb maxtor hd .

yesterday i restarted my topfiled and suddenly my hd is not recognized anymore . when i press the filelist nothing happens , when i press the record button nothing happens too .

then i tried to reinstall the hd to my topfield ( remove it and attach it again ) but with no luck .

then i copied 10 file from my hd to pc using TopfHDRW and all of them seem to play for 5 second and then it stopped playing .

i also tried to convert them after that to mpg using PVAStrumento with no luck .

also it takes alot of time to load on TopfHDRW and it produces strange sound.

I THINK I AM IN A DEEP TROUBLE .

please help .

I'm afraid that you're right.

A strange sound is not a good sign. Most of the time this sound is produced by the HDD trying to recalibrate the heads because it receives invalid data due to a head crash / damaged servo track / defective head amplifiers and none of these faults can be fixed by you. Of course without seeing the drive, my diagnosis might be completely wrong.

What puzzles me is that you can copy about 5 seconds of any file. This would mean that the defective area is located in an area common to all files and this is the FAT. But TopfHDRW reads the FAT only once and uses the copy in memory for all operations. What you can try is to disable Write Mode in the disk menu. Apart from that I don’t have a good idea.

Regards, Alex

from 100 mb to 3 gb

no firebird , i can copy all the files but i can only play the first 5-7 seconds of a certain file

i've just finished copying 240 gb of .rec files from the corrupted hd to another hd , but when i play them on my pc i am facing the same problem .

i also tried uploading these files to my other 5500 pvr receiver ( i have 2 5500 pvrs ) and it plays the first 5 seconds then the picture goes black ( like scrambled channel recording )

in a file with 7mb are only a few second´s in it....
normal you need for one hour 1...2GB, so every file with only, for example, 300mb or smaller is damaged.

it's a about a 20 sec file and the reason i choosed this file is so i can transfer it via email easily

and btw all the files are same i can only play the first 5 seonds of it no matter what size is it whether it is 7 mb or 8 gb .

A data recovery company and that will cost several hundred Euros.

omg :(

do u have any idea why all the files share the same problem and i can play only the first 5 sec of them ?

are the files corrupted ? if i can see their size and transfer them and play the first part they must be allright .

and what about the on projectx message "error while decoding frame not enough data in buffer "
and then it says " cannot find sequence header .

If you can only play 5 seconds, projectX only gets 5 seconds to decode. Then the HD is not able to send more data. Then the buffer underun massage appears. As a result of this, the message can not find sequence header of the transport stream appears.

Your problem of the disc is in an area where the fat or synchro tracks is.
Like firebird said, only a special company may recover your files.
sorry for that

If you vave to buy a new one, use samsung or seagate HDs, because this are the disks which are fully certified by Topfield.
